Carbonless copy paper is becoming more and more popular with both large and small business because it is relatively cheap, extremely easy to use, and generates high quality duplicates.

Consider a medium sized company generating 1000’s of invoices, purchase ordersand work orders (you get the idea) per month, every time using carbon forms in which the’carbon’ sheet is lost or just abandoned attached, not to be used again. Together with Carbonless paper, there’s no’carbon’ sheet – thereby decreasing waste by an unprecedented 50 percent – not to mention space if these newspapers and forms have been archived. The newspaper can be biodegradable.

The technology behind this paper is fairly straightforward. But because of the rising popularity and following demand for carbonless paper goods, many firms are now keeping their own tweaks and approaches as trade secrets. Initially employed for manual backup, carbonless forms have moved into advanced printing in which the paper can be used with conventional inkjet and laserjet printers.

How it works: Take a standard 2-part carbonless form. The rear of the top page is coated using micro-encapsulated dye. The front of the base page is coated in clay that is reactive. When pressure is put on the top page that the micro-capsules of dye split, releasing the dye which then reacts with the clay, creating a permanent mark. Thus the change from carbon based forms to carbonless types doesn’t impact the standard of the copy.

In most cases, carbonless paper is truly preferred for its precision (providing you purchase it from an excellent carbonless dealer). To get a 3-part form, the micro-encapsulated dye is again coated on the rear of the top sheet. The front of the center or’sandwich’ sheet is coated on either side: front with responsive clay along with the back with micro-encapsulated dye. The bottom sheet is front- coated using responsive clay. Printing on the top sheet provides duplicates on the next two sheets. With 2-part, 3-part and 4-part forms (and so on), there isn’t any coating on the front of the highest page or the rear of the underside page.

Carbonless paper has progressed significantly since its actual invention by chemists in the NCR Corporation. Early posts on this sort of paper called it as No Carbon Required paper, or NCR paper, using the Corporation’s acronym. The title NCR Paper has never faded and can be used frequently today.

Though demand for carbonless paper is rising, do not expect prices to scale – to the contrary. The source of carbonless products is increasing daily as paper makers and merchants get on the eco friendly bandwagon. Like the change from the typewriter to a computer keyboard, the transfer to carbonless is an inevitable change which will revolutionize how companies use paper
