Festival Diary 2006

Saturday 2nd September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 1 - Despite the dreadful gales, with winds from the SSW during the day gusting between 29 and 40 mph, allied to driving rain, and a tiny 3.7 metre tide, a considerable number of brave, some might say foolhardy souls, chose to fish.

Between the 3 stations at Brixham, Paignton and Torquay, a total of 34 fish were weighed-in all in excess of 50% of their respective specimen weights.  Of those, 26 were caught from shore, while 8 came from inshore boats.  No fish were weighed-in from wreck.  Of those 34 fish, 11 were 100% of specimen weight or better which is quite remarkable when considering the inclement conditions under which they were caught.

Best fish of the day was a shore caught Bull Huss of  11 lbs 12 ozs 15 dr, 149.805% of specimen weight, caught by Paul Sturgess, a visitor from from Bromsgrove.  I am very happy to report that I was unable to obtain a photo as the fish was still alive and well, and after weighing at Paignton SAA was quickly returned to the water by weigh-in staff.  Well done Paul, you are our early leader and leading Visitor.  You appear to be keeping your options open.  It will be interesting to see where your excellent fish eventually settles within a single prize category.

Next best fish from shore was another Bull Huss caught from shore by Dean West, which weighed 10 lbs 1 oz 14 dr, 126.465 of the 8 lb specimen weight for shore caught Huss.

The best fish from inshore boat was a Thornback Ray which weighed-in at 10 lbs 14 ozs 1 dr, 108.789% of its 10 lb specimen weight.  It was caught inside Salcombe Harbour by Paignton SAA member Paul Millman from his private small boat.  Nice one Paul and well done for safely braving the weather.

Other notable fish included a shore caught LSD of 2-7-12 (110.417% by Brixham SA member, Sean Coulson, which narrowly pipped another LSD of 2-7-8 (109.722%), also caught from shore by another Brixham SA member, Jason Upham.  Steve Shimell weighed-in a quality shore caught Ballan Wrasse of 4-14-4 (108.681%) .  Jason Upham caught another brace of LSDs which weighed in at 2-7-2 and 2-6-12, while Sean Coulson weighed-in another shore caught LSD of 2-6-6 (106.597%).  Neil Burnell went for something different and weighed-in  a  shore caught Three Bearded Rockling of 1-8-12 (103.125%).  Simon Kingshott weighed-in another LSD of 2-4-0 (100%) also caught from shore.

I'm sorry that I can't mention everyone individually, but there was a Dab from a local shore mark which weighed-in at 0-15-8 (96.875%) and there were also were a brace of Flounder caught from a local pier, which weighed 1-13-4 (91.406%) and 1-11-12 (86.719%).  There was a shore caught Conger of 16-12-10 (83.945%).  The best Mackerel to date came from shore at 1-7-3 (82.813%).  There were also assorted Mullet, Garfish, Scad and a Silver Eel.  The only Bass so far was caught from shore by Paignton SAA member, Steve Ainsworth and weighed-in at 3-6-10 (56.901%).

Sunday 3rd September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in  Day 2 - The rain diminished during the day to leave a bright ,sunny, though still quite windy day with a westerly stiff breeze still in the region of 22 mph, which kept most boats confined in harbour, while the tides were still quite small, at around 3.8 metres.

A total of 31 fish in excess of 50% of Festival specimen weight were weighed in at Brixham, Paignton and Torquay.  In contrast to day 1, 0nly 4 specimen fish were recorded in excess of 100%.

These included a Grey Mullet, which weighed-in at Brixham, caught by Rob Caunter, a member of Brixham SA.  It tipped the scales at 5 lbs 1 oz 14 dr (113.715%) and was caught from a private boat in the River Dart.

Lee Piddington caught a Bull Huss from shore which weighed 8 lbs 15 ozs 6 dr, (112.012%), while Carl Underwood, a Paignton SA Junior member, caught his LSD, which weighed 2 lbs 5 ozs 4 dr (103.472%) from shore.  Lee Waring caught a Trigger fish of 2 lbs 12 0zs (100%) from a private small boat.

Of the fish weighed-in 15 were Mullet.  Controversy of the day occurred when Mark Loewy, a member of Torbay & Babbacombe ASA, caught a brace of Mullet from a private small boat within Torquay Harbour.  He took these to the weigh-in station at Torquay, where they recorded 4 lbs 1 oz 12 dr and 4 lbs 1 oz.  These superb fish had some of the obvious attributes of Golden Grey Mullet.  The anal fin was almost white in colour.  The pectoral fins folded forwards to cover the very edge of the eye.  However, there were no obvious protrusions on their top lips and their dorsal fins were not placed exactly as one would expect on a Golden Grey Mullet.

The weigh-in staff at Torquay, assisted by Ted Tuckerman, immediate past Chairman of the NFSA and the British Rod Caught Record Fish Committee, were unable to clearly identify what species of Mullet these two fish were and so sent Mark across to the weigh-in station at Paignton, where they were compared by yet more weigh-in staff, familiar with the species differences, against photographs and a complex list of distinguishing marks which had previously been supplied by Dr. Douglas Herdson, of the National Marine Aquarium.  Still no decision could be made, so I took possession of these two magnificent Mullet, which I will be taking for scrutiny by Dr Doug Herdson at the NMA, Plymouth, hopefully tomorrow morning.  It is critical that these fish are correctly identified as either of them would be a new British record Golden Grey Mullet.  I'll keep you updated on developments.  It does beg the question whether they might possibly be hybrids?

Carol Rice from Derbyshire, a member of the Paignton based Seafield Sea Anglers, caught a Grey Mullet which weighed 4 lbs 1 oz 4 dr from her Husband Mike's small private boat.

Other interesting fish include a Grey Mullet weighed-in at 3 lbs 9 ozs 9 dr also caught by a Lady angler, Allyson Thomas from Aberdare, from shore in the River Dart.

All in all, another excellent day's fishing was enjoyed by those who took part.

Monday 4th September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 3 - What a difference a day makes.  The wind abated and the sun shone for much of the day.  The tide started to build to a more respectable 3.8 metres.  For the first time during the 2006 Festival, boats made their way out to fish inshore and offshore marks.  All in the world was vastly improved.  79 fish were weighed-in, of which 31 were 100% of specimen weight or better.

Top fish of the day was a Black Bream, caught by Chris Fitzpatrick, a visitor aboard Kevin Tate's Torquay charter boat "Dalora II", which weighed 6 lbs 2 ozs 14 dr (190.144%).  Kevin had threatened to do this when leading up to the event he found a productive mark not too far from home for this exciting species.

Duncan Middleditch, a member of Torbay & Babbacombe ASA, caught two very special Congers from wreck, which weighed respectively 79-9-0 (159.125%) and 79-2-0 (158.25%), almost a brace of peas in a pod.

Brixham SA member, Paul Mortimer's Black Bream weighed 4-14-6 (150.721%), while visiting angler Bill Jones' similar specimen weighed 4-10-4 (142.788%).

Simon Mitchell, a member of Paignton SAA, caught the best wreck Pollack to date with a specimen of 16-12-7 (139.811%)

And now for a really pretty fish.  Chris Walker caught a beautifully marked Cuckoo Wrasse which weighed 15 ozs 3 dr (75.938%) from boat on a rock mark out of Dartmouth.

I apologise to those whose fish I have omitted, although I realise that some are in excess of the magic 100% of specimen weight.  It's great to see the months of planning, aided by an improvement in the weather and all the happy anglers, start to come to fruition.

Torbay Fishing Festival Mullet Autopsy - This afternoon, Jim Laing and I took the pair of quality Mullet caught yesterday by Mark Loewy in Torquay Harbour, to the National Aquarium in Plymouth, where they were examined for more than 1½ hours by Dr Douglas Herdson, in our presence.  Doug checked scale counts; intervals of Rays on fins; distances from lips to nostrils; pupil sizes of eyes; and many other distinguishing factors against three textbooks, two in English and one in French, before concluding that although they displayed some characteristics which initially made them appear to be superficially identifiable as Golden Grey Mullet, they were in reality Grey Mullet.  Jim and I were most thankful to Dr. Herdson for his valuable assistance.  We have since notified Mark Loewy of the outcome of our enquiries and will record these two fish for the purposes of Torbay Festival specimen comparisons, as Thick Lipped Grey Mullet.  Sorry Mark to shatter your dreams of a new British record for this species.  Thank you Doug for your special expertise and generous help.  It does call into question the simplistic identification of Golden Grey Mullet by some recreational sea anglers in the UK.

Tuesday 5th September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 4 - What a gorgeous day.  Anglers basked in bright sunshine with gentle zephyrs.  The tide made a massive jump to 4.5 metres at 4.17pm high water.  Still the fish kept coming.  A total of 83 fish were weighed-in with 36 recording 100% of specimen weight or better.

Best fish of the day was a Black Bream of 5 lbs 4 ozs 12 dr (162.981%), caught from wreck, by Brixham SA member, and Coxswain of the R.N.L.I. Torbay Lifeboat, Mark Criddle.

There were many other memorable fish and again, I apologise to everyone I have been unable to mention.  Perhaps it will be your turn tomorrow?  I really do hope so.

Wednesday 6th September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 5 - The day started calm and sunny, though a westerly breeze came up during the afternoon to ruffle the surface of the sea.  The tide built to 4.9 metres at 17:08 pm.  59 fish were weighed-in of which 27 were in excess of the magic 100% of specimen weight or better.

Best fish of the day was another wreck Pollack caught by Paignton SAA member Pete Davies from a private boat out of Dartmouth.  It tipped the scales at 17 lbs 8 ozs 2 dr (145.898%).

There was quite a crop of wreck Pollack, caught by a variety of competitors, which included some excellent fish.

Tony Dunn, a visiting angler, caught a Conger from wreck which tipped the scales at 68-8-8 (137.063%).

Paul Millman, a member of Paignton SAA, caught the best Eel from his private boat to date from an in-shore rough ground mark.  It weighed 42-0-14 (131.421%).

Brixham SA member, Terry Dakin, caught the best Black Bream of the day, with a specimen taken from an offshore wreck mark which weighed  4-3-8 (129.808%).  Festival Chairman, Jim Laing, fishing aboard Jeffrey Taylor's charter boat "Jubrae", out of Torquay caught another top quality Black Bream which weighed a tad less at 4-1-6 (125.721%).

Tony Phillips caught a Cuckoo Wrasse which weighed 1-9-8 (127.5%) from an in-shore wreck mark while targeting Bream aboard Kevin Tate's Torquay based charter boat "Dalora II".  What a pretty fish.

Adam Slack, a member of Brixham SA caught a LSD from shore which weighed 2-8-14 (113.542%).  Not many fish were weighed-in from shore today.

Nick Berry, a member of Paignton SAA, fished from shore in the River Teign, to record the only fish to date caught from that venue, when he landed a Grey Mullet which weighed 4 lbs 8 ozs 2 dr (106.066 dr).

Richard Baker, a member of Torbay & Babbacombe ASA caught a ballan Wrasse of 5-4-0 from boat, (105%), which narrowly beat another Ballan Wrasse of 4-10-4, (103.993%), caught from shore by Marek Winiarski, another welcome visitor.

Frank Stones from the Torbay & Babbacombe ASA caught a Small Eyed Ray from boat, under Start Point, which weighed 9-12-15 (103.248%).

Jac Roberts, age 12 years, a Junior visiting angler, caught his very own Conger which weighed 40 lbs 8 ozs, (60.336%), aboard Simon Pedley's Paignton charter boat "Our Joe-L".  It bettered his own Eel of yesterday and is the best Conger recorded by a Junior angler to date in this year's Festival.  Well done Jac.

Another successful day for all concerned.

Thursday 7th September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 6 -  The day was bright and sunny, although a sharp easterly breeze sprung up in the morning.  As the tide turned at lunchtime, the sea abated during the afternoon to give anglers a modicum of comfort.  The high tide at 17.55 pm measured 5.2 metres.  A total of 39 fish were weighed-in of which 13 topped 100% of specimen weight or better.

Fish of the day was a Bass, from wreck caught by visiting angler Rob Jones, from South Wales, aboard Kevin Tate's Torquay charter boat "Dalora II".  It weighed 12 lbs 6 ozs 4 dr, (154.883%).  Rob used a blue "Shad" lure to tempt this fine specimen.  Well done Rob and Kevin for catching such a memorable double figure Bass, the heaviest so far of this specie during this year's Festival.

Rob Marshall, a member of Brixham SA, caught a Bull Huss from shore which weighed 11-0-8 (137.891%).

Best Pollack of the day from wreck was caught by Bill Harkness, a member of Paignton SA, aboard Dave Harrison's Dartmouth charter boat "Gemini".  It weighed 15 lbs 10 ozs 3 dr (130.306%), but it did win the sweepstake for best fish of the day amongst those on board.  Well done Bill.  It narrowly beat Brian Coles, who was fishing from the same boat.  Brian caught a Pollack which weighed 14-12-0 (122.917%).

Brixham SA members, Kevin Hoare and Lindsey Kittle fished together under Start Point on the edge of the "Skerries" from Kevin's private boat "Red Dwarf".  Kevin caught a specimen Small Eyed Ray which weighed 11-3-6 (118.010%), narrowly beating Lindsey, whose SE Ray weighed 11-3-0 (117.763%).

Dean Corbett, fishing the same area from his private boat "She Likes It Rough", caught another SE Ray which weighed 10-10-0 (111.842%).

Peter Passmore caught another 4 SE Rays aboard his private boat "Karin Louise" on the "Skerries", he weighed in his best fish which went 9-12-12 (103.125%) and was returned alive after weighing back at Paignton SAA.

Nick Berry caught another Grey Mullet from the River Teign, which weighed 4-3-0 (98.529%), though it did not better his fish of yesterday from the same river.

Visiting angler, James Corpe, who hails from Cornwall, and is a regular competitor in this event, caught a fine Bass from shore in Torbay, which weighed 5-1-2 ((84.505%).

Ashley Lane, who charters his "Charlotte Louise" out of Paignton took out his Wife, "Charlotte", (now we know why his boat is so well named), together with several of her lady friends yesterday evening.  Charlotte Lane lived up to her name, when she caught her own Bass which weighed 5-1-14 (63.965%) from a wreck mark.

Brixham SA member, Jason Upham, caught his LSD which weighed 2-8-8 (112.5%) from shore.

David Tozer caught a Grey Mullet from shore which weighed 4-6-10 (103.86%).

Dave Baker, a member of Paignton SAA, caught a John Dory, which was too small to weigh-in, as it was less than 50% of specimen weight, however it was a welcome first for this exotic specie aboard "Dalora II".

There were several good Mackerel and Garfish, together with more wreck caught Pollack; Scad from inshore boat and Mullet from boat and shore, which also made a good showing.

Friday 8th September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 7 - The weather turned for the worse.  South Easterly winds touching Force 7 drove an evil sea, assisted by a huge 5.3 metre tide at 6.42 pm high water.  I know of only one charter boat who ventured out to sea, only to return to harbour by lunchtime.

Only 16 fish were weighed-in this evening.  None attained 100% of specimen weight.  The catch reflected the sea conditions.

The top three fish today were a Three Bearded Rockling of 1 lb 7 ozs (95.833%) caught from shore by Gary Sims.

Jason Upham was next with a Golden Grey Mullet of 2-4-10 (91.563%), caught from inshore boat.

Wayne Butler, weighed-in a Grey Mullet from inshore boat of 4-1-0 (90.278%).

Other interesting fish included a Grey Mullet caught from shore in the River Dart by "Mullet Master" Mike Bailey, who is Hon. Sec. of Brixham SA club.  It weighed 3-12-2 (88.419%).

This year for the first time we have added Smoothounds to the Festival specimen list at the request of anglers from local clubs.  Visiting angler, Jason Tucker, caught a specimen from shore which weighed 10-1-10 (84.180%) of the 12 lb specimen weight.

Pete Winstanley weighed-in a Trigger Fish, caught inside Salcombe Harbour from an inshore boat.  It weighed 2-1-9 (76.278%).

There were also LSD; Ballan Wrasse to 3-14-4 from boat; together with Mackerel and Garfish amongst the other species caught today.

Saturday 9th September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 8 - The penultimate day of the event.  South Easterly winds gusting to 23 mph, combined with a 5.3 metre high tide at 7.21 pm, to ensure that no fish were weighed-in from wreck.  Of the 23 fish weighed, 8 exceeded the magic 100% of specimen weight. 10 fish were from inshore boat, two of which were in the River Dart.  The remainder were caught from shore.

Best fish of the day was a shore caught Conger which weighed 36 lbs 2 ozs, (180.625%).  It was captured by Simon Foot, a member of Torbay & Babbacombe ASA.  It is the best specimen fish from shore to date during this year's event.

It just pipped Steve Underwood, a member of Paignton SAA, who caught his Bull Huss which weighed 13 lbs 2 ozs 8 dr, (164.453%), from a local shore mark, on Calamari bait.  It represents the best Salachii so far during this week.

Steve also caught a LSD from the same shore mark which weighed2-10-6, (117.708%) of specimen weight, while his Son, Carl, a Junior member of Paignton SAA caught his own LSD from shore, which weighed 2-9-1, (114.063%).

Jason Upham, a member of Brixham SA, caught his Grey Mullet from boat.  It weighed 4-14-0, (108.333%).

Lindsey Kittle, another member of Brixham SA, caught a Flounder from inshore boat, which weighed 2-1-2, (103.516%).

There were other LSDs in excess of 100% of specimen weight.

Adam Penfold, a member of Brixham SA, caught a pair of Thornback ray from boat in the River Dart, which weighed 8-9-6, (85.859%), and 8-4-6 (82.734%).

Tony Searle caught his Small Eyed Ray from shore, which weighed 6-6-0, (85%).

Trevor Millman caught another Thornback ray from his private small boat, within Salcombe harbour.  It weighed 7-14-11, (79.18%).

Other fish caught included a Silver Eel of 1-4-0; together with Scad, Garfish, Pollack, and Ballan Wrasse.

Once again the top fish should take over some categories, moving others into other award classes.  It's never over until the fat lady sings!

Sunday 10th September - Torbay Fishing Festival Weigh-in Day 9 - Possibly the most settled weather during the entire Festival.  Little wind to ruffle the surface of the sea combined with bright sunshine.  The 5.2 metre high water at 8.02 pm generated a great deal of tidal flow, which meant that those anglers who adapted their methods and tactics caught some very fine fish, while others who were less innovative did not.  55 anglers weighed-in good fish, of which 30 were in excess of the magic 100% of specimen weight.  It was a day for moving and removing some fish caught earlier in the week from contention.

Best fish of the day was a Conger Eel, which weighed 93 lbs 8 ozs, (187%), caught by Ivybridge angler, Alan Jones, aboard Dave Harrison's Dartmouth charter boat "Gemini".  Alan hooked it while drifting, on a string of 3 Fladen "Hokkai" feathers, baited with pieces of Mackerel, intended to lure a Ling on a mid-Channel wreck.  And to top it all, the feathers were attached to 20 lb BS line.

Alan's Conger narrowly pipped Andrew Simpson, a visitor, who caught another Eel, which weighed 84 lbs 15 ozs 14 dr, (164.984%), from a wreck aboard Simon Pedley's Paignton charter boat, "Our Joe-L".

Using the same successful tactic, Alan Jones also caught a Pollack which weighed 17-3-6, (143.424%), and a top quality Cod of 24-4-10, (134.939%).

Junior angler, Paignton SAA member, Callum Nathan caught a Pollack from a wreck mark aboard his Dad's private boat.  It weighed-in at 19 lbs 8 ozs 5 dr, (162.663%), and is therefore the best Pollack recorded during this year's Festival.

Gary Pointon, another Paignton SAA member caught a Cuckoo Wrasse which weighed 1-13-12, (148.750%), also from a wreck.  It eclipsed Tony Phillip's 1-9-8 specimen caught on Wednesday.

Torbay and Babbacombe ASA member, John Thompson caught yet another Cuckoo Wrasse, which weighed 1 lb 12 ozs, (140%).

David Trevarthen, from Ivybridge, caught the best Ling of the week from wreck, with his specimen of 23-2-2, (115.664%), also the best of this specie recorded during this year's Festival.  It was caught while aboard Dave Harrison's Dartmouth charter boat, "Gemini".

Gary Sims, a member of Paignton SAA, caught his Bass which weighed 6-14-6, (114.974%), from shore.

Lady Paignton SAA member, Gail Nathan caught a wreck Pollack from her Husband's private boat, which weighed 13-10-14, (113.917%).

Mike Johnson caught a Bull Huss which weighed 11-0-2, (110.078%), aboard his private small boat.

Sallie Date, a Lady member of Torbay & Babbacombe ASA, caught a Small Eyed Ray of 10-1-9, (106.291%), from boat on the "Skerries", under Start Point.

Paignton SAA Junior member, Steven Amer, fishing aboard Simon Pedley's Paignton charter boat, "Our Joe-L", caught a wreck Conger which weighed 48-10-8, (97.313%), the best recorded by a Junior angler in this year's event.

Space prevents me from listing the many other excellent specimen fish.  Clearly the Fat Lady was in a teasing mood today.  She did sing, but took her time getting around to it.

Another year has passed.  Tomorrow evening the Festival Committee will meet to distil the winners across 104 prize categories, from amongst the many specimen fish caught.  We will endeavour to publish a provisional list of winners on this web site on Tuesday 12th September 2006.  Queries should be addressed to the Hon. Sec.  The final results will be published several days later and all winners will be notified by post, together with tickets for the Civic reception and Prize Presentation Evening on the 30th September.  If you didn't win but would still like to go to the presentation, please contact the Hon. Sec. with a SAE.  See you there.

Saturday 30th September 2006 - Torbay Fishing Festival Civic Reception & Presentation - What a super evening we all enjoyed.  Everyone had fun.  Trophies, cash and superb tackle prizes were presented to winners, by the leader of Torbay Council, Councillor John Dunn, and Norman Berry, Owner and Editor of Sea Angling news, on behalf of our generous sponsors, Abu Garcia (UK) Ltd.

I'm sorry to say that as I was rather preoccupied as MC for the evening, I was unable to take my own photos for the web site.  If any of you have your own photos which you would like me to display, please send them to info@torbayfishingfestival.co.uk and I will do my best to oblige.

Before the Civic Reception opened, I did manage to take a photograph of the Trophies and superb tackle prizes on display.

The photographer at the Hoburne, Grange Court, Grange Road, Paignton, took pictures of every individual prize which was presented to winners across the 104 categories.  He accepted orders on the night, to post photos to those who placed orders, at a most reasonable £5, including postage.  If you didn't, he will have the photos on display in the foyer at the Hoburne this week during the daytimes, where you can call in to see your own picture and buy it from him if you like it.  I regret I can't obtain these pictures from him on your behalf.

I did manage to take just one photo of the presentation of a cheque to the crew of the R.N.L.I. Torbay Lifeboat for £987.  This represented money raised last year from a prize draw, by recreational sea anglers at the Civic Reception in 2005.  it was donated towards the provision of a dedicated pontoon in Brixham Harbour for the exclusive use of the R.N.L.I. Torbay Lifeboat.  We raised still more money, in excess of £800, for the benefit of the R.N.L.I. Torbay Lifeboat at the 2006 Civic Reception.

Another year has passed.  The organising committee would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make the 2006 Torbay Fishing Festival such a resounding success.  There are too many of you to mention individually, but you know who you are.  Once again THANK YOU!

We need help to organise the 2007 Festival.  If you would be willing to give perhaps a day each month to help, we need you.  Just Email info@torbayfishingfestival.co.uk or call me on 07970 409938 or 01803 834341 and I'll tell you everything you might like to know before you decide whether you can assist with the event, which has grown over the past 39 years, to be amongst the very best anywhere in the UK.  Without your help it can't happen!  It doesn't organise itself.
